Discussion:
How much does it cost to add an AC to a pop-up camper?

Got a towing truck this week. Now time to shop for a used tent
trailer, and getting ready for my kid's Fall break in early October.
There are lots of tent trailer in the RVtrader, but very few has AC.
Most of the units that has AC are priced about 5 to 6K (they are big
too). My budget is <$5K.
Do anyone know how much a new AC would cost? It runs on AC power only,
correct? And how much electric power does it need?
I probably can get by without an AC since most of the place I go will
be 7000' altitude or by the coast. However, may need the AC someday
when we go cross the mid-west in the summer.
At last glance a unit will cost you around $500-$600. Add to that
installation unless you can do it yourself.

They will pull about 1200watts cooling and 1800watts heating which means
you'll need a 20amp AC circuit. 15 amps will do for cooling only.

I live in Arizona and have not needed air conditioning in my trailer.
In the summer we camp at 7,000' or above. In the winter we camp at
1,000-3,000' where its cool. In some states cooling is an added bonus.
In a popup it will not cool enough to handle hot climates over 100F
and if in a very humid area, say 90F and 90% humidity it may struggle.

Love my a/c I installed this past spring in my pop up.

I wouldn't count on excessive cooling in full sun with no shade, but at night
to get the dampness out - it can't be beat.

As mentioned - about $600 for the unit ( both the main unit & the ceiling
panel), I would spend the extra $50 or so for the electric heat option- takes
the chill off cool mornings without running the main furnace - but used with
the main furnace can give a very quick warm up of the interior.
You need to see if you need to get a brace for the roof for support (
fortunately I already had one). Need to cut the hole in the roof for it (
typically 14"x14"), careful measuring is a must so the unit is straight.
Routing the wire can be tricky - depends on what's what with your interior as
to the best route to go. I used 12/2 with ground SO type cable ( looks like
heavy extension cord ) - probably about 15-20' , available at any good hardware
store. forget the exact price.
In my case ( I already had 30 amp service for the camper) I mounted & spliced
a small 2 circut circut breaker box on the main cord comming in ( under my
dinette seat) . One breaker is a 30 amp to feed the main camper electical
system, and a 20 amp breaker to feed the a/c cord. Roughly $35-40.
You have to be the judge of your own mechanical skills as to how much you can
do yourself. Keep in mind all electrical connections must be proper & tight &
secure for safety.
